Top Rated Cocktails Made with Angostura Bitters

A bitter mixture made to a secret recipe by infusing herbs and spices in alcohol.

History 
Angostura Bitters were invented in the 19th century by a German doctor working in Venezuela.  The product was initially sold as a tonic with medicinal properties and thought to cure upset stomachs and hiccups.  The bitters are today made in Trinidad using a recipe known only to one person.
Usage 
Whilst today there is a thriving market in bitters for a long time Angostura Bitters were one of the few commercially available cocktail bitters.  They're an essential ingredient in a number of classic recipes including the Old Fashioned, The Champagne Cocktail and the Manhantten.

A few dashes of bitters can be used to balance out the sweetness created by adding syrups to a drink.  It can also be used as an aromatic garnish for cocktails made with egg whites.
